Prayers for the people

23 February 2020

Prayer of Intercession
Sunday, 23 February 2020
Seventh Sunday after Epiphany
Prepared and led by Robert Lam

For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the sky, Lord, we give you thanks. A confirmation of your ever-abiding presence in our world, in our community and in our lives.

We pray for the world groaning under the effect of climate change: the melting glaciers, the wildfires in Australia and the severe storms in many parts of the world.

We also pray for the animal world: the huge population of animals killed in the bushfires in Australia and the ever-encroaching human settlements into areas where wildlife used to roam freely; and the indiscriminate capture and killing of these wildlife as food and sport.

Lord, help us to strive to be better stewards of your creation.

We pray for those affected by Coronavirus. We remember particularly the people in Hubei and Wuhan and the people of Daegu and Cheongdo.

We pray for the doctors and medical profession in their fight against the virus. May they have adequate protective gears and proper working hours.

We pray for families with suspected or infected family members, particularly the weak and the elderly. May they have access to proper medical care and attention.

We pray for medical scientists in understanding more about the virus and the early development of vaccines and proper medication.

We pray for the leaders of the countries affected by virus in setting up humane and effective prevention measures of those infected.

We pray for those who are sick in our midst. May you comfort them, give them peace, restore and heal them.

In the ecumenical cycle of prayers, we pray together with other churches in Hong Kong and around the world for the people and churches of Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

We give thanks to the important roles political leaders here have made to European integration. We also give thanks to the ecumenical contributions that have come from this area. We pray for greater tolerance and solidarity between people of different cultural, linguistic and political backgrounds.

We pray all this in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ

Amen

Holy God, sometimes our lives are so full of worries that we forget how you look after us through every aspect of our lives. When our worries begins to spiral out of control, help us turn them into conversations with you, confident that you will calm our anxiety and give us hope for the future.

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Loving God, through your love and mercy you turn the darkness of death into the dawn of new life. We bring before you the families of the 29 victims who were killed in the unfortunate shooting incident in the northeastern region of Thailand. We also pray for the many other victims who were injured in that incident.
Comfort those who grieve in their sorrow and those who are worried about how they will cope on their own and reassure them that you will never leave them to carry the burdens of life unaided.

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Merciful God, the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has claimed more than
1,300 lives while cases of infected individuals in China and 25 other countries have reached over 67,000. Many health care workers who have committed to help the  patients have themselves been infected with the virus because of severe shortage of medicine and protective equipment. Merciful God, we pray for our government leaders and medical experts to have wisdom and knowledge to combat the spread of COVID-19 and to find a cure for it.

Creator God, thank you for this beautiful earth with its lovely seasons and all the animals that inhabit it. As you looked upon your creation you called it “very good.” It is in this “very good” creation that you have given each of us life – and have invited us to enjoy life abundantly.
Forgive us, God, that in our enjoyment of life, we have taken your creation for granted and have abused and destroyed it.
Grant us, O Lord,  the grace to respect and care for Your creation
And help us to use our technological inventiveness to undo the damage we have done to Your creation and to sustain Your gift of nature.

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Everlasting God, we ask you to lead us into the coming week,
Help us to believe that you are close by us, keep us from making mistakes and help us never to disappoint you through our words and actions.
Almighty God: accept these prayers for we pray in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Amen
