Prayer of Intercession

26 June 2022

Prepared by Judy Chan

Third Sunday After Pentecost

Let us pray: O God, thank you for your lovingkindness and mercy that carry us through each day, whether we realize it or not. Through Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, we learn from the past, live in the present and have hope for the future. Always.

With confidence then we lift up our concerns to you:

-For those suffering from brutal war and violence, when will it end? How will it end? These are truly crimes against humanity but will anyone be held accountable? We have yet to know the full extent of the atrocities of man against man, and men against women and children. O Lord, keep our eyes and souls open to their pain, give all strength to endure, courage to fight for the truth.

Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

-For those suffering from devastating natural disasters – the earthquake in Afghanistan, severe flooding in southern China, unprecedented heat waves around the globe. Truly creation groans from the toll on human beings and nature. May those grieving be comforted, may communities be helped to rebuild, may preventive measures be taken to protect the environment from unnatural catastrophes. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

-For those in leadership and positions of authority both near and far, O God, give them hearts of flesh rather than hearts of stone. Give them genuine humility and fear of the Almighty, knowing to whom much has been given, much is expected. Leaders must be held accountable for their decisions and actions, not only to the people, but ultimately to you.

Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

-For those anxiously waiting – for visas, jobs, school results, hotel rooms, news from the doctor or news from home – may all know your peace that passes understanding to keep their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

-For our own congregation, we remember Asha, Mrs Samuel, Jenny, Hend, Jeanette, Rachel, Ng Kam Lee, Raymond, Chung Yoke Chin, Chui, and Ramon. And for all of us and those we love struggling at work, school or home, help us cope with the stress and conflicts. We put our trust in you to make all things right in your time. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

In the ecumenical prayer cycle, we lift up the churches and people of all faiths in Kenya and Tanzania. We pray for interfaith relations between Christians and Muslims, for the safekeeping of young people, for victims of gender-based violence, and for sustainable solutions so that all may have sufficient food, water and livelihood. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Amen.

Prayer of Intercession

05 June 2022

Pentecost Sunday

 Lord:

On this Whitsunday, we give thanks to the gift of the Holy Spirit which dwells in our midst and within us, guiding us in our daily walk with you, and comforting us in times of despair.

We pray for the Environment.

Lord, you have created the world in all its beauty, for us to inhabit, to enjoy and to be good stewards, handing it from one generation to another.

But the environment is deteriorating. Pollution, global warming, plastics in the oceans affecting not only humans but every living creature in the sky, on land and in the sea.

We pray for ourselves, that we will have this mindset to conserve the natural resources and to respect the natural world that you have created.

We pray for our Government and all Governments to actively pursue and enact policies to protect the enivornment.

We pray for the world.

We remember the ongoing war in Ukraine, the loss of so many lives on both sides of the war. We pray for the Holy Spirit to move the hearts of the leaders in Russia and Ukraine that this conflict may come to an end and peace returns. We pray for wisdom that the other governments will find a solution to bring about this peaceful resolution.

We remember the increasing mass shooting and gun violence in the US killing so many school children as well as church congregation. Lord, may the Holy Spirit comfort the families that have lost loved ones due to these incidents. May the Holy Spirit guide the Government and Congress in preventing similar incidents from happening.

We pray for Hong Kong.

We pray for those who have continued to be grieved by the tragic events of June 4th. May they find solace from you.

We pray for the new Government which will come into being on July 1. We pray that this Government will have capable and caring ministers to address the issues of poverty in our midst and protection of freedom.

We pray for our Church leaders. That they may be empowered by the Holy Spirit in wisdom and discernment to preach the Gospel and to handle pressing issues of the community and the church congregations.

We pray for the many NGOs working in Hong Kong, providing care and support to the marginalized and those that are less privileged in our community: those providing food, providing shelter, providing facilities for the physically and mentally challenged outside the confines of Government. We pray for the paid staff and volunteers in these NGOs. May they continue to find strength and purpose in this work.

We pray for Kowloon Union Church

That the church continues to be a beacon and witness of your great love to the neighbourhood and community. We continue to pray for the activities of the church in its mission and outreach and in its activities in the building up of members spiritually.

We pray for healing and comfort to our church members, including Tong, Ramon, Asha Melwani, the mother of Alex and Mrs Samuel; Jenny Alegre; Hend; Jeanette Lee; Rachel Perry; Ng Kam Lee;  Raymond Lau; Chung Yoke Chin; Joseph Muluswela; and Constance Chaukura

In the ecumenical cycle of prayer, we remember the people and churches of all faith in Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Eswatini.

We pray all these in the name of

Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ

Amen
